Dems: Newt Gingrich says Medicare plan ‘radical’

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich called Representative Jon Runyan’s (NJ-03) plan to end Medicare “radical” and “too big a jump,” this weekend on Meet the Press, according to a statement from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Gingrich, who famously said Medicare should “wither on the vine,” believes Runyan’s plan is “right-wing social engineering.” Runyan voted for a controversial budget plan to end Medicare and raise health care costs for seniors instead of ending taxpayer giveaways for Big Oil making record profits or tax breaks for the ultra rich. Runyan’s plan means that people between the ages of 44 and 55 who paid into Medicare for more than 25 years would need an additional $182,00 in retirement savings to pay for their health care, according to the DCCC.

“It’s clear Representative Jon Runyan’s vote to end Medicare is too extreme when even Newt Gingrich think it’s radical,” said Jesse Ferguson of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Representative Runyan made all the wrong choices in voting to end Medicare so he could protect taxpayer giveaways for Big Oil companies and tax breaks for the ultra rich. If Runyan’s plan to end Medicare is too radical for Newt Gingrich then it’s definitely too radical for New Jersey families.”
