It’s a murderers stretch for the freshmen Dawgs

By COACH MICHAEL SCANNELL

The HMHS freshman baseball team played yet another demanding baseball game, this time vs. Cumberland Regional High School. The schedule did not ease up and the ball game ended in yet another one run contest. Sean Funke got the start and pitched six impressive innings, collecting seven strikeouts and allowing only one earned run. Cumberland got the game started with a first inning run but the Haddons responded with two first inning runs of their own. Cumberland then took advantage of a couple two out errors to take a 4–2 lead in the third inning.

The resilient Dawgs respond immediately with two runs in the bottom of the third inning and two more runs in the fifth inning, taking a 6–4 lead into the seventh inning. In the seventh inning, Cumberland threatened with one run and then loaded the bases. On the mound, Julian DiNoia started the inning with a strikeout and Carter Fichter ended the game with a strikeout, leaving the bases loaded with Cumberland players and the Haddons with a well played 6- 5 victory.

John Alemi did a fabulous job catching, throwing out two base runners trying to steal. Fichter collected two hits (including a double), Justin Skiba collected a hit, Nick Gangemi a crushed line drive and Alemi with a huge base hit all continue to swing red hot bats, Funke, Matt Cassell and Tom Goings each added key base hits. All phases of the Haddons game were clicking, the outfield play and quality at-bats of Will Connell, Mark Nowicki and Coleburn Vielher continue to be impeccable.
