Lenape principal issues letter about Feb. 10 fire

The Medford Fire Department responded to Lenape High School yesterday afternoon, Feb. 10.

Lenape High School Principal Anthony Cattani issued the following letter on the school’s Web site, www.lrhsd.org, after yesterday’s incident:

“On Thursday February 10, 2011, at approximately 2:45 p.m., following student dismissal, a smoke detector was activated as a result of a smoke condition in our metal shop classroom located in D-wing. A Lenape employee was performing a maintenance task with a welder, which created the smoke condition. In an effort to maintain a safe environment for our students and staff, we determined that it was best to evacuate Lenape High School. Following a thorough investigation of the site by the Medford Township Fire Department, Medford Township Police Department and the Burlington County Health Department, the building was deemed safe to return. All precautions are being taken to ensure a safe learning environment for all involved.

The safety and security of our students and staff continue to be our highest priority. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the incident in the community, please feel free to contact Chief Thomas Thorn of the Medford Fire Department at 609–953–3291. If you have any concern about your child’s safety while attending Lenape High School, please contact Principal Len Westman or me at 609–654–5111.”
