On Jan. 22, Jemima Alexandra Fleming Cobb, surrounded by her family, and with the skirl of bagpipes in the background, passed into the Lord’s loving care. She was 89 years old.
Ina, as she preferred to be called, was born in Invergowrie, Scotland, on July 8, 1921. Later as a young girl she moved with her family to Dundee. In the latter city, she graduated with pride from the Morgan Academy. During World War II she served in the British Army, Auxiliary Territorial Service, Signal Corp. She was assigned to an electronic listening post in Harrogate, England. There, along with other operators, she was responsible for listening and recording enemy transmissions. Ina was proud of her service and talked of it often. While at Harrogate, she met an American GI, Chester Cobb Jr., and one year later in 1945, while both were on leave, they were married.
In May 1946, Ina arrived in New York as a war bride, aboard the steamship Saturnia. She settled into life with her new family at Avalon and would reside there for nearly 50 years. Ina was active in the Avalon Methodist Church, PTA and served on the school board. In 1955 she proudly became a citizen of the USA. After raising her children, Ina was employed in the office at Tozour-Kerr Builders. After retiring, she moved to Holiday Village East in Mount Laurel. Most recently she resided at Wiley Christian Retirement Community in Marlton. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church Moorestown.
Daughter of the late John Muggins Fleming and Maria Seath Fleming, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Chester Leon Cobb Jr., formerly of Avalon. Left to cherish her memories are a brother and sister-in-law, James and May Fleming of Monifieth, Scotland; a brother-in-law, Norman Cobb of Avalon; a son Robert Cobb and his wife Judith, of Ewing; a daughter Jacalyn Diepold and her husband John, of Moorestown; two grandsons, Stuart Cobb of Toms River, and Jeffrey Diepold of Richmond, Va.; two granddaughters, Molly Cobb Fallon of Ewing, and Julia Diepold Snyder of Abington, Pa.; and one great-grandson, Parker Robert Fallon of Ewing.
Ina enjoyed walking, traveling, knitting, reading, crossword puzzles and church, but most of all her family and friends. She will be remembered for her easy smile, friendly nature, generosity, intelligence, and thoughtfulness. While she had a gentle disposition, she never failed to face both ups and downs with self-confidence and quiet determination. She never complained about her life’s challenges.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church Moorestown. Interment will follow at the Cape May County Veterans Cemetery, Cape May Court House.
