Heat alert issued through Friday

By ROBERT LINNEHAN | The Haddonfield Sun

A Camden County heat alert had been declared for today and will extend several days until Friday, July 9, according to the Camden County Health Officer.

Temperatures touched 100 degrees today in the region according to weather.com. According to the county, temperatures for Wednesday will reach almost 100 degrees as well and the heat wave will extend into Friday.

The heat index is estimated to be between 100 and 105 degrees for Wednesday afternoon, according to Camden County representatives.

Thursday should see a break from the heat, but will still be excessively humid and hot according to the county. Friday, the temperatures should break as a cold front from the Northwest is expected to reach the region by Saturday.

“Individuals should avoid spending excessive time outdoors during the very hot and increasingly humid weather we are experiencing,” said Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to the Camden County Department of Health and Human Services. “Be sure to check on your elderly relatives and neighbors, and remain in an air conditioned location if possible.”

PSEG, the electric supplier for Camden County, estimated that the 10,500 megawatt predicted output for today would be the highest so far this summer.

According to a press release issued by Camden County, residents can call the Camden County Heatline at (800) 999–9045 or (877) 222–3737 for several summer heat programs, including home visits by special field teams and enhanced daytime outreach for the homeless.

The Heatline is only activated when the National Weather Service and the Department of Health and Human Services issue an excessive heat warning.
