Thomas J. Powell Jr.

June 1, 2010

Thomas J. Powell Jr. age 76 of Moorestown passed away suddenly on June 1.

A resident of Moorestown for 41 years, Tom is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Barbara. Father of Thomas J. III, Timothy and Todd. Brother of Carol (David) Cecil. Brother in Law of Miles (Jeanne) Powell and Fred Powell. “TJ” was the proud grandfather of Zachary, Taylor, Connor, Tyler, Meghan, Jake, Evan, and Matthew Powell.

In his youth, Tom was an accomplished student athlete who became a NJ All State Football selection from Bloomfield, NJ and received a scholarship to attend Colgate University. At Colgate Tom continued to excel in football. A two-way starter, Tom earned a selection as a First Team All American offensive tackle. Tom played in the East-West Shrine game and even the legendary Jim Brown from Syracuse University was once quoted as saying that “Tom Powell is one of the best college linebackers I have ever faced.”

At Colgate Tom participated in ROTC and received his commission as a pilot in the United States Air force. Last but not least, while at Colgate, Tom met and “pinned” his future wife Barbara who attended nearby Cazenovia College.

Tom went on to become a successful sales executive with Avis and PHH Fleet Leasing.

Tom was active in his community as a coach and served, at different times, as a Deacon, Elder and Trustee at the First Presbyterian Church in Moorestown.

Tom Powell will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather who was unfailingly helpful, encouraging, and kind to all those who knew him.

He loved nothing more than to tinker around his home and those of his children. And with the exception of Barbara, his greatest passion was to watch his grandchildren play football, baseball, soccer, volleyball and run track.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Tom’s name to the First Presbyterian Church of Moorestown.
